SLFP branches favour Mahinda

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

Most SLFP branches in the country plan to pass resolutions shortly urging President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to appoint Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Rajapakse as the Opposition Leader.

SLFP MPs who did not want to be named said only Mahinda Rajapakse can bring the party back to power. There is no other competent person to lead the party in Parliament, they said.

The Katana SLFP branch last week took the lead by passing a resolution urging the party to appoint Rajapakse as the Opposition Leader.

SLFP MP Jeyeraj Fernandopulle speaking to the Daily News said: "We sent the resolution to the General Secretary of the PA D. M. Jayaratne last week. Only Mahinda can bring the party back to power because he is the only popular figure among the people."
