Common candidate for BCCSL Presidency?

By Dinesh Weerawansa

There will be a 'common candidate' seeking the post of President uncontested at the forthcoming elections of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

In bid to unite the various sections in local cricket administration and make all their services available to further develop Sri Lanka cricket, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe has instructed the Sports Minister to bring a common candidate to seek the top chair at the country's cricket governing body.

Sports Ministry sources said that various groups eyeing for the power at the country's richest sports body have been asked to get-together and propose three names by Wednesday, of which one will be picked to become Sri Lanka's new cricket chief. The sources added that the main criteria for the selection of the common candidate would be the acceptability for all fictions in the cricket administration, popularity amongst the BCCSL membership, proven track record with administrative qualities.

Several names have been discussed in the top circles and the final selection would be made within the course of this week. The selected nominee, who will be acceptable to all sections, would be uncontested at the AGM.

Amongst those running for the BCCSL Presidency are Thilanga Sumathipala, Jayantha Dharmadasa, Michael Tissera, Bandula Warnapura, Duleep Mendis, Rienzie Wijetillake and also the present chairman of the BCCSL Interim committee, Vijaya Malalasekera. Once this is finalised this week, Sports Minister Johnston Fernando would instruct the Director General of Sports, Milton Amarasinghe to make arrangements to conduct the AGM of the BCCSL, which would now be held by March end.
