Amendment to postpone polls in NE

by Manjula Fernando

Local Government Minister Alick Aluvihare is to decide on bringing an amendment to the Local Authorities Elections Act today to postpone the local polls in the North-East. The decision will be based on reports submitted by North and East Government Agents which are expected today, official sources said.

Meanwhile, the PA is expected to hand over their nomination lists for the Local Government Polls scheduled next month starting from today and the UNP is to submit their lists after February 5. None of the major political parties had submitted nominations even by yesterday, Elections Department sources told the Daily News.

Sources said that two new political parties recognised by the Elections Commissioner will contest the Local Government Polls. The North East Muslim Congress and the Ceylon Democratic Unity Alliance are the new parties which will join the fray this year.

Fifty one political parties are eligible to contest the polls. The Commissioner has not recognised three political parties - EPRLF, People's Liberation Solidarity Fund and National Unity Alliance - which have rival groups within them. These parties were not recognised at the parliamentary election last year as well.
