The Vavuniya-Trincomalee road which remained closed for nearly 12 years was reopened to civilian traffic on Independence Day. A Trincomalee-Vavuniya bus service was started to coincide with the reopening of the road, which links the North and East. Residents of Trincomalee will now be able to travel to Vavuniya and vice versa directly, without going through Anuradhapura or Medawachchiya. Minister Assisting Vanni Rehabilitation Noordeen Mashoor inaugurated the bus service. 


Public debt surges to Rs 1,464 billion

Moving a vote on account for the one-month period commencing from March 19, 2002 up to the date of approval of the appropriation bill for the year 2002, Finance Minister K.N. Choksy told Parliament yesterday that the public debt stood at Rs. 1,464 billion while economic growth was below zero.

President concerned about LTTE child recruitment

President Chandrika  Kumaratunga is deeply concerned regarding reports that the LTTE is continuing the large scale forcible recruitment of children, despite the cessation of hostilities and plans for peace negotiations between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE.
