by Ananda Pathiraja The Police team investigating the Rs. 17 million bank robbery at the People's Bank Regional Branch, Anuradhapura has found that the bank officers have not taken action to repair the alarm bell connected to safe and the Anuradhapura Police for the past two years. Police officers attached to the Anuradhapura Police station had said the alarm bell had not rung on the day of the robbery and added that if is was in order it would have been automatically activated when robbers broke open the padlocks of the bank door. People's Bank Assistant General Manager (NCP) said no security personnel are deployed for the protection of any of the People's Bank branches in Anuradhapura area in the nights or during holidays as other security measures have been taken for the protection of those banks. Security personnel are deployed only during day time when banks are open for the public, he added. He said that they are not deploying any security personnel at this branch as they have obtained insurance cover for the monies in the safe. Two specialists from the company which had installed the safe at the bank had also visited the bank last morning to investigate the robbery. The Police team has already questioned a number of people regarding the incident and a special Police team has been deployed to assist them. Further investigations are being conducted under the supervision of Anuradhapura SSP Mahinda Beddewela and Anuradhapura Police Crime OIC IP Tennekoon. |
