NLF to contest LG election with Vasu

by Ranga Jayasuriya

New Left Front leader Dr Wickremabhahu Karunaratne said that the NLF will contest the Local Government Election under a 'no contest pact' with Vasudeva Nanayakkara's Democratic Left Front to build up a 'left alternative in local politics'.

"We are contesting 61 Provincial Councils under a no contest pact with Vasu although we have ideological differences. We want to build up a left alternative, while Vasu believes in a democratic left alliance," Dr Wickremabhahu said on Monday at a press conference.

He said the NLF will campaign for three main objectives: the rights of the ordinary masses which, he said, were ignored by 'the elitist UNP and the PA'; for peace and against the racist campaign of the JVP and certain Sinhala ultra-nationalist elements and against the exploitative intervention of the global capitalism on the rights of labour, women, homosexuals, civil liberty and environment protection.

The NLF will hold one rally each in every district and three rallies in Colombo. The party will also have village level meetings.

Dr. Wickremabhahu said the NLF tried to increase women participation in the election. "But it was very difficult, because women were scared of political violence. Violence keeps women away from participating in party politics," he said.
