Handagama : Flying with One Wing

A theme of a different nature not focused so far in the local film scene has been employed in the latest film by the internationally acclaimed director Asoka Handagama. The film named " Thani Thatuwen Igillenna ( Flying With One Wing), by this recipient of several international awards is now in its final stage of production. "

It is quite different to others directed by me as it contains a different and rare theme as well as the structure, Asoka told Stage and Screen.

The film is woven round an incident but centred on a lass who prefers to act as a male." Harbouring jealousy against rights and privileges enjoyed by males in contemporary society, she attempts to behave as a male but failed miserably."

The film begins to unveils from the point where her dream marks the first collapse and then goes to present the tragedy encountered in her life.

Asoka says, the story, actually is not an unusual one as similar cases were found in contemporary society. But it is something which had not been focused on the silver screen so far.

" I see this character as a lonely rebel." he points out.

A B.Sc Special Degree graduate (in Mathematics) from the Kelaniya University and M.Sc in Economics from the University of Warwick Handagama came into film making via theatre and television in 1985.

A firm promoter of an alternative film culture, Handagama's last film - Me Mage Sandai ( This is My Moon) won several international awards and was also screened at a number of international film festivals in Tokyo, Bangkok, Austria, India, Belgium, Norway and France.

The whole film was shot in the vicinity of Galle Fort within a short period of two weeks.

The film now is in the process of being edited and dubbed. It stars W.Jayasiri, Anoma Jinadari, Mahendra Perera, Jagath Chamila and a host of other versatile actors. Music is by Rohana Weerasinghe
