Defending champs HNB 'C' favoured to retain title

HNB 'C' - the defending champions go out as firm favourites to retain the Janashakthi-MCA Division 'C' 50-overs League 2002 title, when they confront their arch rivals and tremendously lucky - Sampath Bank 'B' in the final today, at the MCA grounds, commencing 9.30 a.m.

Both teams played together in Group 'A' in the league round and HNB 'C' thrashed Sampath Bank 'B' by 8 wkts at the MCA grounds, in the 'League' confrontation.

It is ironic that both Banks had lost to Lanka Oberoi in the League, the hoteliers being most unfortunate not to secure a place in the semis, elbowed out by Sampath Bank 'B' by a fraction of a point on the net run rate.

Mabroes Teas and Aitken Spence blocked the path of Oberoi to make way for Sampath 'B' - Mabroe crashing to the lowest total on the tournament against Sampath, thus boosting the Bankers run rate, while Aitken spence, though losing to Lanka Oberoi, scoring 21 runs more while chasing their victory target.

However, Sampath Bank 'B' proved their worth by beating J.L. Morisons, the second Group 'B leaders in the second semi-final by seven runs at DSS grounds.

In the other semi-final, played at the MCA, HNB 'C' beat Tri Star Apparel 'A' by 3 wkts.

Based on performances in the league round, HNB 'C's hard hitting batsman Nimesh Perera was named the best batsman of the tournament, winning it for the second year round. J. L. Morisons' spinner Dinuk Hettiarachchi was named as the best bowler of the tournament.

Achintha Illukkumbura leads the strong HNB 'C' side, S. Jayalal will lead Sampath 'A', who has lately strengthened the side with the inclusion of former Sri Lanka spinner, Piyal Wijetunga and speedster Chamara Soysa.

The 'Battle of the Banks' - sure worth watching today.
