Target fails causing injury to a civilian An attempt by suspected LTTE cadres to hurl a hand grenade at two Army soldiers who were returning to Kaluwankerni, about 14 kms North of Batticaloa town on March 3rd around 7.00 p.m. had failed but caused injury to one civilian. It is alleged that a few LTTE cadres who were in the general area of Kaluwankerni had mingled with civilians before they threw the hand grenade at these two unarmed soldiers in civilian clothes who were returning to the Kaluwankerni Detachment from home. Following the explosion, civilians at the location had started running in all directions. The injured civilian identified as Vairamutthu Shivagnanam of Kaluwankerni had been admitted to the Eravur hospital for treatment. Eravur Police is conducting further investigations. Troops on a clearing operation in the general area of Thatchchanthoppu, about 12 kms east of Jaffna town had recovered two hand grenades on 4th March 2002. The recovered items were later destroyed by the engineer troops. Sri Lanka Navy craft on sea patrol apprehended two Indian fishing trawlers with seven fishermen on board at two nautical miles west of Nainativu on March 2, 2002 around 8.30 pm. These seven Indian fishermen were handed over to Kayts Police with their fishing gear for further investigations, states a Government Information Department press release. |
