Power crisis - An analysis of short and long term solutions by W. A. C. P. Wijayaratne At the time UNP came into power in 1977, the total installed power
capacity of Sri Lanka was around 400 megawatts. Between 1978 and 1994
August, the following power projects were added to the national grid - 620
megawatts from Mahaweli projects, 183.5 megawatts of other hydro projects,
200 megawatts of thermal projects. Between 1978 and 1994 under the UNP
government the total of capacity of projects completed were 1003.5
megawatts. Consequently, total installed capacity as at August 1994 were
