President says 'no faith in police' deploy Armed Forces'

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a letter to the Interior Minister John Amaratunga last Sunday strongly recommended to him that the three forces be called out to assist the Police during the local government elections since "the People's Alliance and I, as the President, have no faith in the Police with regard to their capability to maintain law and order and act independently and impartially with cases of election related violence."

New Grade 10 scholarship

A new scholarship scheme will be implemented by the Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry for the benefit of schoolchildren from grades 10 to 13 with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank .

Scrap PTA -Sampanthan

The Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) should no longer continue in the Statute Book, said Mr. R. Sampanthan, Leader of the Tamil National Alliance parliamentary group, in a letter to the Prime Minister. "We would strongly urge that the rigorous impact of the PTA on the lives of Tamil detainees and people should not continue," he stressed.
