LTTE men threaten and refuse to leave area

An LTTE member holding a machete had threatened an Army officer in the general area of Puthukudiruppu, about 28 kms. Northwest of Batticaloa town on March 19 refusing to leave the premises.

On information given by civilians to the Valachchenai Brigade Headquarters that a group of LTTE cadres, some of whom were armed, had gathered at Puthukudiruppu, the troops from Kalkudah sector reached the location.

On inquiry, troops found that these LTTE men were preparing to hold a commemorative function called, Annai Poopadi without obtaining permission from relevant authorities.

However, the Commanding Officer of the Security Forces had told that such LTTE gatherings might lead to the violation of terms and conditions of the Ceasefire Agreement and requested them to get back to the uncleared areas.

One of the LTTE men had pointed a machete at the officer and threatened him refusing to leave the area. The matter had been referred to Valachchenai Brigade Headquarters.

Troops allow LTTE cadres to move into uncleared areas

Troops manning a road block at Vavunatheevu, about six kms Southwest of Batticaloa town had come across two LTTE cadres who were wearing cyanide capsules on 17 March around 3.30 p.m.

Both cadres on bicycles were dressed in civil clothes at the time of detection.

However, since their intention was to proceed into the uncleared areas, troops had allowed them to proceed further after recording their details.
