Four member armed gang arrested

by Matugama roving correspondet

The Matugama police acting on a tip off arrested a four member armed gang that robbed jewellery worth Rs. 5 million from a pawn shop in Kalamulla along with the loot minutes after the robbery last week.

Police said the arrest was made after a brief exchange of fire with the robbers by blocking their escape route with the help of the police patrol car. A revolver, three hand bombs and several rounds of T-56 and T-18 ammunition which were in their possession were also taken into police custody along with their getaway vehicle.

Investigations revealed that among the four were notorious criminals who had escaped from jail. They had been serving sentences for involvement in several earlier cases of house breaking and theft.

Further investigations are continuing directed by Matugama OIC, Jayasiri Kodituwakku and assisted by Sergeant Kapila and Constables, Ajith, Sendanayake and Kusumsiri.
