Under 24 Rugby sevens on March 23 and 24 The Western Province Rugby Football Union will conduct the under 24 seven-a-side rugby tournament at CR and FC grounds, Longden place on March 23 and 24. We are conducting this tournament under the development programme of our union to promote rugby in the province and also to give an opportunity for the youngsters to show their skills. This tournament is targeted for school leavers and younger players of the Clubs, and is conducted mainly with the aim of giving an opportunity for these players to continue the sport without a break. This tournament gives an opportunity for the youngsters to display their skills as they do not have an opportunity to play in "A" Division Club Rugby for a while, as the slots are already filled by more experienced players. However by giving these youngsters an opportunity to play in a tournament targeted for younger players the clubs also have a chance to pick the cream of players as well as look for new talent. There is a tremendous interest shown by the clubs for tournaments this year with most of the leading clubs have confirmed their participation i.e. CR & FC, CH & FC, Police SC, Army SC, Navy SC. There are several new teams too that are expected to participate in this tournament i.e. Panadura RFC, Wattala SC, Super Star Sports Club (Gampaha). There are 18 teams that have confirmed participation. We expect it to increase to 24 teams. |
