Locals steal the thunder as Indians fail to impress by Bernard Perera Aravinda Premadasa, Rizvi Farouk in motor cars and A. Tanabe from Japan and Nalin Perera took major honours at the Colombo Super Cross 2002, which was held at Battaramulla yesterday. It was a day field with thrills and spill as both riders and drivers did their best to maintain their prestige in the respective events. On the two wheeler it was a ding dong battle between Japanese rider Tanabe who rode a powerful machine (429 cc), Nalin Perera also on a 400 cc bike and Rakita Wijetunga on a Yamaha 125. The open event saw Rakita keep ahead of all other riders for over three laps with Tanabe and Nalin chasing behind. It became an unlucky day for the young rider when his machine stalled at this stage giving the opportunity for the other two to battle it out. Tanabe rode extremely well to grab two wins beating Nalin in a thrilling race. The Indian riders failed to live upto expectations. Seven riders who participated failed secure a place in any event. It was also interesting to watch young rider Gayan Sandaruwan to win two events in the lower category, the 80 cc events. The children's event for under 10 was an interesting affair for the spectators as well as for them. Aravinda Premadasa had stiff competition from a host of top class drivers Dan Dissanayake, Romani de Silva and Nalin Perera before getting the better of them in the fourth lap to forge ahead. Once he got off the bunch it was his race in the modified cab event for over 1665 cc. Rizvi Farouk drove his Honda brilliantly from the word go until the chequered flag. He never had opposition chasing him but it was big battle between Bri Ponnambalam and M. Mannapperuma for the second and third place. The final event for cars over 1350 cc saw a battle between father and son. It was Mannapperuma senior who was in front while junior was following. Nalin D. Perera had better ideas and went ahead of Madhushan Mannapperuma to be placed second. This race too was attracted the interest of all spectators. Sports Minister Johnston Fernando was the chief guest. |
