Troops complain to ceasefire monitors Ground troops brought to the notice of the Ceasefire Monitors that an armed group of about 300 LTTE cadres forcibly crossed the Polonnaruwa - Valachchenai Main Supply Road in Meeyankulam and moved towards the North on March 30. The Officer Commanding in Meeyankulam attempted to prevent the cadres but they did not heed the order and made their way. Troops in the area brought to the notice of the Ceasefire Monitors in the area. The LTTE leader who led the group identified himself as Lt. Col. Weerasingham has said that they were scheduled to attend a function at Kathiraveli and return within 48 hours. Majority of the cadres looked new recruits in the age of between 12 to 16 years carrying LMGs, RPGs and MPMGs and video cameras, a Government Information Department press release stated. Meanwhile, two youths, residents of Kaluwankerni and Chenkalady in Batticoloa had been detained by the LTTE for over a week, their mother complained to the Army detachment at Black Bridge. On the orders of the LTTE, Suresh Kumar, a teacher of Kaluwankerni Vidyalaya and Sivaranjan of Chenkalady had left their homes to report to the LTTE office at Karadiyanaru in the general area of Chenkalady on March 25 and did not return home, she said. |
