Stop second grade politics, Bandula tells JVP

by Rodney Martinesz

Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardena yesterday challenged the JVP to prove any financial impropriety on his part whilst offering to shed all his portfolios and quit parliament itself if the party could substantiate its claim that he, his wife or children had in anyway defaulted on any payments to any state Bank or financial institution.

The Minister was making a special statement in Parliament responding to an allegation of the previous day by MP Wimal Weerawansa during adjournment time that he (the Minister) had crossed over to the UNP in return for a pledge that a huge loan obtained by him from a private bank would be written off.

"I urge the JVP to refrain from engaging in its customary second grade politics and permit Parliament proceedings to be continued in a decent manner."

He said banks could take legal action against any borrower if the failure to honour any loan commitment accedes three months.

"I challenge Wimal Weerawansa or the JVP to prove its claim." If it is proved that he or his family had defaulted any state Bank or financial institution he would quit Parliament the next day the Minister stressed.
