Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe addressing yesterday's May Day rally at Town Hall said that the Government has never isolated the unemployed youth in the country and steps are now being discussed with relevant officials to see whether a special payment could be granted to them until they find permanent jobs. He said under the Draft National Employment Policy which was presented to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on May Day, steps will be taken to strengthen the living standards of 6.7 million labour force in the country. "To achieve a stable economy in our country and bring down the cost of living which are important to solve the burning issues of masses, all possible steps must be taken to end the unending ethnic conflict". " This is not an easy task. But our Prime Minister has taken the challenge to eradicate the Northern war with the assistance of international community and a significant improvement could be seen in the peace process". Therefore it is the duty of all concerned to help the Government in their endeavour to solve the problem rather than criticising the Government's effort, he added. Under the NEP which will be presented to Parliament before long we will focus attention on solving the unemployment problem of undergraduates and also youth in the plantation sector. "Steps will also be taken to give vocational training to all unemployed youth and also to improve their knowledge of English Language enabling them to find jobs here and abroad. Minister Rauff Hakeem said that their party will extend the fullest support to the Government for the peace process as everlasting peace is needed to achieve a stable economy in the country. |
