'Compensation for political victims in Ratnapura'

by P. D. A. S. Gunasekera, Ratnapura Group Correspondent

All those who were victims to the wave of heinous crimes of arson and murder let loose by the assassination of the Ratnapura MP Nalanda Ellawala in 1997 would be fully compensated without delay, said Defence Minister Tilak Marapona at Ratnapura recently.

He was addressing the DCC meeting held in the Ratnapura District Secretariat recently when the SPC Member Siripala Kiriella (UNP) revealed that though the Nalanda incident took place in Kuruwita the houses and property of the UNP supporters situated miles away in the Ratnapura district had been destroyed by the PA activists as a result and that an innocent old woman named Esonona at Gilimale had her house razed to the ground and her plantation of few acres forcibly taken over by a PA supporter.

Mr. Marapona also heard the sordid story of Esonona who is now forced to live in a shed. All her property accumulated over a period of 12 years of hard labour was destroyed and plundered that fatal year and 129 other UNPers also lost their properties and valuables running into rupees, said that it was clear from what he heard that no action had been taken over the past five years.

Defence Minister Marapona at this stage ordered the Ratnapura ASP, Devasiri Malimboda to investigate the case of Mrs. Esonona and help her regain possession of her lost property without delay and submit a report.

The minister also assured at the meeting that he would take steps to pay compensation to all 129 UNP victims who went under the attack on the day in question.

He promised to table the case for compensation at the next sitting of the cabinet and obtain permission for redress in full at the earliest opportunity.

Chief Minister, Mohan Ellawala, Ratnapura District MP, Ajith Kumara Maddegama and several others also spoke.
