Lankans in second successive win

by Dinesh Weerawansa

The overnight showers badly affected the morning session before the hosts Sri Lanka won their second successive tie on the second day's play of the Asia-Oceania 14 years-and-under Boys' Qualifying Zone World Junior Championship continued at the National Tennis Centre courts, Colombo yesterday.

Only a solitary tie - between Thailand and Pakistan, could be played last morning due to overnight rain. Continuation of the five unfinished doubles matches will begin, if weather permits, at 9.00am today.

Having beaten Uzbekistan 3-0 in the opening day, Sri Lankan boys continued their good work to secure their second win, beating Malaysia in similar fashion last afternoon. Sri Lanka's Franklyn Emmanuel and N.S. Nishendran coasted to victory in their singles matches and in the doubles rubber to secure dominancy in Group 3. Malaysians Razlan Rawi and Cheng Yung Lee had no answer to the superb allround display by the Sri Lankans who ousted the opponents in style to secure a straight sets win. But the duo will be tested fully in their last round robin tie against strong Japanese to be played today.

Top seeded Korea, launched their campaign in style with a smashing win over hapless Hong Kong in the two singles.

Faisal Adchan gave some hope to unseeded Indonesia when he recorded a good straight sets win over the fancied Australian Stephen Fotakis, 7/5, 6/2, in the 2nd singles of the tie between the two countries. Adchan's consistency unsettled Foatakis who succumbed due to lot of 'unforced errors' he made during the entire match. Australia, however, were leading winning the first set in the deciding doubles rubber.

Japan had a tough time in their tie against underdogs Uzbekistan when Takeru Yamamoto toiled hard to win his singles match against Vaja Uzakov (6/1, 5/7, 6/4). Meanwhile, China and India edged out their opponents, New Zealand and Taiwan respectively with ease.
