Former Nalanda skipper passes away The death occurred on the 30th April of Nelson Karunaratne, an outstanding sportsman of yesteryear at the age of 94 years. Nelson had his education at Nalanda Vidyalaya and played for the first eleven cricket team from 1927 to 1929. He captained the team in 1929 and held a record in bowling that year. Nelson continued his sports career after leaving school when he worked as an Administrative Officer in the Postal Department. In the department he took up to tennis and won the Government Services Junior Championships consecutively for five years during the period 1932 to 1936. He also won the Doubles Burden Challenge Cup in the Port and Telegraph Department Championships. Around the same period Nelson took up to volleyball and was soon selected as a member of the national team. His interest in the game continued for a long time thereafter and was elected as Chairman of the Volleyball Federation. Nelson Karunaratne leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter. His funeral takes place today 2nd May, 2002 at the General Cemetery, Kanatte. |
