Thuhashini wins Player of the Year Trophy by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka's women golfer Thuhashini Selvaratnam has brought honour and fame to Sri Lanka by winning the AWGA 2001 Player of the Year Trophy, according to the Arizona Women's Golf Association. According to the Sun Golf Magazine for April, Thuhashini Selvaratnam a native of Colombo and presently in Arizona was a recent Graduate of ASU (1999). AS a Sun Devil she facilitated the women's golf team to NCAA titles in 1995, 97 and 98 and was a two time Pac-10 all Academic honours. Upon graduation Selvaratnam returned to Sri Lanka for a few months and played in 11 National and international tournaments. She won 10 of the tournaments. Returning to the States she was brought on by the Arizona Golf Association as its USGA P.J. Boatwrit, Jr. in turn in 2000. At the expiration of the Internship, the A.G.A. brought her on full time as Operations Manager. Competition with the AWGA began in the fall of 2000 for Selvaratnam where she won her inaugural event, the Arizona women's stroke play championship. In the following year, she amassed 1845 points in the AWGA point qualification program to claim in the 2001 title player of the year. In 1989, Young Thuhashini Selvaratnam won the Ceylon Ladies Amateur Championship at the tender age of 12, and thus got into the Guinness Book. Thanks to this correspondent who was instrumental in giving the fullest coverage in the Ceylon 'Daily News' and the 'Ceylon Observer' of this historical achievement of young Thuhasini and thus paved the way for getting her name in the Guinness Book. Thuhashini hails from a golfing family, where her grandfather late R.L. Illangakoon, her mother Sweneetha Selvaratnam and her father Siva Selvaratnam were all keen golfing champions. |
