Four member weightlifting team for Thailand

by Our Kandy sports correspondent

Sri Lanka Weight Lifting Federation sent a four member weight lifting team to participate in the Junior Asian Weight Lifting Championships 2002 to be held in Kankean in Thailand this week.

A notable feature in the team is that three weight lifters from the ruined city of Polonnaruwa have been included in the junior national which augurs well for the future of the sport in the outstations.

The only schoolboy to win a place in the side is fifteen year old Ransilu Jayatillake from Kingswood College who has set up a number of records in both weight lifting and power lifting.

D.U. Mohottilal Jayatillake will accompany the team as the Manager with G.K.K.N. Silva as the coach.

The team will be made up as follows:

S.M.A.S. Bandara (Polonnaruwa Weight Lifting Club - under-56 kg.), D.J.N. Dissanayake (Pollonnaruwa WLC, under-62 kg.), G.R.S.W.P. Perera (Polonnaruwa WLC, under-77 kg.), T.J.T. Imran (Kurunegala WLC, under-69 kg.), Ransilu Jayatillake (Kingswood College, under-105 kg.) and W.A. Weerasinghe (Kegalle WLC, over-105 kg.).
