| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | All members should conduct affairs according to LG norms and ethics by Gampaha South group correspondent The Mayor of newly constituted Gampaha Municipal Council Ajith Kumara Mannapperuma addressing the councils first monthly meeting said the whole council must get to-gether to conduct the affairs of the council according to law without committing acts contrary to norms and ethics of Local Government, and to fulfil the needs of the ratepayers in the town. I as a Mayor highly appreciate the decisions taken by the Opposition to co-operate with the ruling party to solve the problems of Gampaha town. Following the political norms and ethics, policies of the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe we, the ruling party took the decisions to entrust the responsibility to all opposition members appointing them to all sub committees of the council. We as the elected members of the newly constituted Municipal Council have much of the responsibility to perform the services for the well-being of the ratepayers. The unity among the members of the council and their devotion to serve the people is the only remedy to overcome the problems. Opposition Leader and former Chairman Dakshina Rathnasinghe (PA) welcoming the Mayor said the aim of both parties is to serve the rate-payers and to develop the town. Therefore, the Opposition has taken unanimous decision to co-operate with the ruling party and to support to perform the services for the betterment of the people. I as the former Chairman of this council highly appreciate the co-operation of the Opposition extended to me during the tenure of my office. The unity among the members will bring the best of results. The most senior member of the council Donald Jayawardhana (UNP) referring to the history of the council said it was commendable to mention the unity we had between the ruling and opposition during the past 56 years. I as the senior member of the Council have the faith and confidence in the decision taken by the Opposition to co-operate with the ruling party. With the elevation of the status of a Municipal Council, we, the members have to render our services devotedly. Deputy Mayor Somasiri Senanayaka (UNP) said the newly elected Mayor had the capability to give a good leadership and these were experienced council members in both parties. Therefore, we will be able to develop the town and fulfil the needs of the ratepayers. Sarath Amarasekera PA said, we the Opposition have taken the decision to co-operate with the ruling party. We only oppose any step that would bring the adverse results to the people of the town. However as a responsible opposition, we support the good projects, proposed by the Municipal Council. |
