Sweeping changes to electoral system proposed

The government will present sweeping changes to the current system of electing representatives to legislative bodies, to the all political parties represented in Parliament next week, the government announced yesterday.

SC to communicate determination of VAT Bill to Speaker

The Supreme Court would communicate its determination of the Value Added Tax Bill to the Speaker.
The Bench comprised Justices S.W.B. Wadugodapitiya PC, Hector S. Yapa and Asoka de Silva.
The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Saleem Marsoof PC appearing for the Attorney General, at the outset informed the court that the government had decided to amend Clause 2(1) of the Bill in which the Minister was empowered to fix two tax rates.

Air force chief quits

The Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Air Marshal Jayalth Weerakkody quit his post yesterday over his alleged involvement in a fatal car crash, official sources said.

Five year dengue control plan mooted
