Navy in convincing win

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club registered a convincing 29 points to 3 win over Sri Lanka Air Force SC in their Caltex Inter-Club premier league rugby championship match played at Welisara yesterday. It was Navy SC's fourth win for the season.

The Sailors put up a superb performance to outplay Airmen. Navy SC collected their points from three goals, one try and a penalty against a solitary drop goal by Air Force SC. The winners led 17-3 at the short whistle.

Ravi Jayasuriya had a good game for the hosts, scoring two beautiful tries. The other two Navy tries were scored by centre Kolonna and K.S.P.Kumara. Navy's new find - soccerite turned rugby player, full back Gunapala was outstanding on the last line of defence. Gunapala not only was solid in defence, but converted three of their four tries and also put over a penalty.

Air Force painted a poor picture and could not match with the superior Navy outfit, which was even better before their home crowd. Viraj Devasurendra did the solitary scoring for Air Force, when he dropped a goal in the first half.
