St. Anne's Talawila feast on August 4 Everything is ready for the main feast of St. Anne's, Talawila which will be celebrated on August 4 according to the Administrator of the Shrine Rev. Fr. Sunil Wijesinghe. The festive season begins on Sunday, July 28 with the hoisting of the flag staff. The Bishop of Chilaw Rt. Rev. Dr. Frank Marcus Fernando will detail a large number of priests to take up residence in the shrine premises to cater to the needs of the thousands of pilgrims who will be staying in the shrine. As usual all government departments like the health, police, co-operative, marketing etc will co-operate to attend to the needs of the pilgrim camp. The Administrator Rev. Fr. Wijesinghe has made a personal appeal to pilgrims to refrain from bringing in liquor, music and sports goods into the shrine premises and thereby creating a carnival atmosphere. The festival pontifical high mass will be celebrated by Rt. Rev. Dr. Frank Marcus Fernando at 7.00 a.m. while there will be masses for late comers both at 10.00 a.m. and 12.00 noon.
The Sri Lanka Vegetarian Society and Poorna Health Care Trust will host at 10 a.m. on Saturday July 20 at Salika Hall, Park Road, Colombo 5, a lecture on "Natural Food: the Supreme Way to Good Health" by Dr. H. M. S. S. K. Herath, Divisional Director of Health Services, Mawathagama states a Society press release. The release adds Dr. Herath, a medical graduate of Peradeniya University, is a new energetic advocate of vegetarianism whose primary motivation is ethical and Buddhist. Since March 2002 he has been conducting a special research project with 400 odd expectant mothers in which he has motivated them to lead a stress-free religiously oriented life, adopting as far as possible a plant-based diet and the practice of meditation. Some 70 women have fully embraced the vegetarian diet, while the rest have opted to go partially (i.e., most-of-the-time) vegetarian. The doctor says that all the women without exception have given birth to healthy babies, none under-weight. He is monitoring their progress regularly and finds the data very encouraging. Dr. Herath is also working in close liaison with members of the local Maha Sangha. So great has been the impact that he has made on the Sangha, that the Mawathagama Sasana Araksaka Bala Mandalaya has taken a decision to air a tape-recorded speech of Dr. Herath on Poya days at temples of the area for the benefit of devotees observing sil.
The Dept. of Accounting and Financial Management, Faculty of Management Studies of University of Sri Jayawardenepura, will hold its Tenth Anniversary Commemorative meeting and Management Conference on July 19 at 2.00 pm at BMICH Committee Room A. Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs and other distinguished guests will grace the occasion. The Department of Accounting is proud of its performance since its inception in 1992 when it first started with a batch of 59 students. While applauding its expansion, progress and achievements it is only but fair to express gratitude towards the dedicated staff of lecturers loyal students past and present and other patrons and well-wishers, an AFMA spokesman said.
An industrial exhibition will be held at the MC Heyzer stadium Trincomalee from August 16 to 20. This years UNP convention is scheduled to be held on August 16 and 17 at the same venue. The exhibition will consist of a Korean pavilion, Japanese pavilion and an Eastern pavilion, service sector and there will also be an amusement park (Carnival). Minister of Industries Rohita Bogollagama recently had a discussion with local industrialists and officials. He said this exhibition will be an eye opener for the private sector to come forward and take up to industries. Minister Bogollagama said the coal power plant to be erected in Trincomalee would bring prosperity to this area in particular. The Cabinet has approved the project and it will cost the government Rs. 250 billion. Work will commence soon.
The human-elephant conflict is increasing rapidly in border villages of Galewela divisional secretary's area. However the Wildlife conservation Department has not come up with a solution to avoid this situation. According to the public five persons were killed in the area by wild elephants during the last few years, as well as individual properties worth more than Rs. 20 million have been destroyed. Meanwhile the public are using several illegal methods to kill the wild elephants like poisoning. Recently a tusker died in Pibidunugama area near Moragolla hamlet. |
