Education Minister - CTTU talks successful

The Ceylon Tamil Teachers' Union (CTTU) has decided to put off its strike action consequent to successful talks, the delegation of the CTTU had with the Minister of Education Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku in Colombo. At the talks held at 'Isurupaya' office the Minister had assured that he would take steps to provide appointments to 3,000 Tamil medium teachers to serve in the North East province to ease the present shortage. Firstly one thousand graduates will be given appointments as teachers.

The Minister had also promised the CTTU delegation that a Tamil medium officer would be appointed as Deputy Director General of Education in the Ministry with immediate effect. The Minister has further promised to take prompt action to release Rs. 125 m to pay salary arrears to teachers and principals in the North East schools.

Some of the 30 demands put forward by the CTTU were considered at the discussion. The Minister assured the CTTU delegation he would meet them within one month's time to discuss the other demands.
