| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Thailand hopes for peace in Sri Lanka - Deputy Thai PM "We extend our full support to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and his government for launching the peace initiative. Thailand and its people hopefully look forward to the dawn of peace and racial harmony in your country", said Thai Deputy Prime Minister, Pongpol Adireksarn welcoming Colombo Mayor, Prasanna Gunawardene and Matale Mayor Hilmy Carim at his office in Bangkok recently. The two Mayors represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Mayor's Conference held at United Nations Office in Thailand. The Deputy Prime Minister said that Thailand is committed to establishment of peace in Asia and supports all steps initiated by the countries in the region in pursuit of same. "We fully endorse the Sri Lankan Prime Minister's decision to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the LTTE ending the scourge of decades old civil war. Further, the selection of Thailand as the forum for peace talks bears special significance. At present, the Thai authorities are planning out the logistics necessary to make the event a success", he concluded. |
