A ceremony to wish our athletes the best of luck at the forthcoming 14th Asian Athletic championship meet in Colombo was launched by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Johnston Fernando at Independence Square yesterday. A highlight of this ceremony was the launching of a colourfully decorated bus to tour the country creating a public awareness about the meet. A group of schoolchildren participated in the ceremony. 


Private bus owners agree to reduce fares

The Sri Lanka Private Bus Owners Association has agreed to reduce bus fares following the Government's recent decision to reduce fuel prices. The Association which met Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake yesterday, had come to this decision in order to support the Government's efforts to bring down the cost of living.

President not empowered to arbitrarily take over Ministries - Prof. Peiris

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is not empowered under the existing Constitutional provisions to take over the control of Ministries at her will and pleasure, Cabinet spokesman and Minister of Enterprise Development, Investment Promotion, Industrial Policy and Constitutional Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris told the weekly Cabinet news conference yesterday.
