Private members motion adopted without division

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

A private members motion moved by the JVP council member S. Amarasinghe requesting that common lands belonging to all Local Government institutions be registered under Western Provincial Council (WPC) and for immediate measures to look into any malpractices in land deals was adopted without division at the WPC meeting.

Tabling the motion, Amarasinghe said there are many common lands which became vested after sub-divisions of lands in the past period with the Local Government institutions under the WPC. Information has been revealed that the Chief Executives of these institutions destroy public assets by misusing them without being properly and lawfully vested with the Local Government institutions.

Sirikamal de Silva (UNP) said this "timely" motion has stagnated for several moths. When these lands are partitioned, certain section of these lands should be vested in the Local Government institutions through a title deed. But this procedure has not been followed in the Western Provincial Council.

Lionel Kariyawasam (MEP) said the improper land partition has created a lot of environmental problems.
