LTTE hands over soldier's body

by Ranil Wijayapala

The LTTE has handed over the body of the soldier who was killed in the LTTE held areas in Muhamalai on Thursday night to the ICRC and it was due to hand over to the Security Forces at Vavuniya last afternoon, ICRC spokesman Sukumar Rockwood said. Meanwhile, SLMM spokesman Teutor Torkelson and Military Spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said both the SLMM and Army had commenced inquiries in to the incident last morning.

According to initial inquiries the soldier had been shot dead by the LTTE cadres at Muhamalai as he had fired a quite a number of shots at the LTTE cadres there, SLMM spokesman added.

Two LTTE cadres have also been injured in this incident and bullets have hit their bodies.

LTTE cadres have then fired shots at this soldier killing him in a retaliatory move, he added.

However, the incident would not jeopardise the Ceasefire Agreement between the Government and the LTTE since the LTTE cadres have shot at the soldier in a defensive move, Torkelson added.
