TNA discusses resettlement of civilians in North by Ranil Wijayapala and Ranga Jayasuriya The Tamil National Alliance on thursday met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Defence Ministry officials to discuss the resettlement activities in Valikamam and Thenmarachchi. The Government agreed to withdraw the Security Forces 200 metres into the periphery of the security zones in order to facilitate the resettlement work, TULF President Anandasangaree told the Daily News. The Security Forces also agreed to allow the cultivation of 3,000 acres of paddy land in Thanankilappu and provide humanitarian assistance for the resettlement process.The Security Forces will accelerate de-mining in the cleared areas and will facilitate the work of volunteer de-mining groups currently operating in the area. Meanwhile the SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde yesterday met the LTTE political Wing Leader Thamilchelvam in Kilinochchi to discuss the LTTE demand for a sea movement. "The LTTE agreed with 95 per cent of the conditions governing the sea movement, but the talks did not reach a conclusion," SLMM deputy chief Hugrup Haukland told the Daily News. He, however said a settlement will be reached within next few days. The SLMM sent both parties a six-page document containing conditions for the sea movement. The Government is yet to respond to the SLMM proposals. The LTTE has since April been demanding Government approval to ferry cadres in plainclothes and civilians in their boats between the LTTE held areas in the Vanni and the East. |
