by Kegalle special correspondent The Kegalle district development progress evaluation conference was held at the Kegalle kachcheri auditorium presided over by Kegalle District Parliamentarian and Wayamba Development Minister Jayatilake Podinilame. Kegalle district MP and the Samurdhi Minister R. A. D. Sirisena disclosed that some families of sound income are also receiving Samurdhi benefits since the PA administration and that he has planned to scrutinize all details with regard to the private income of those miscreants and rectify the situation. To a question raised by a Pradeshiya Sabha member with regard to the closing down of some rural schools closer to the town, the Kegalle district parliamentarian and the Minister of Tertiary Education and Training Kabir Hasheem said most students in these rural schools have succeeded in gaining entrance to better schools in the city, and therefore, we must create more facilities for the education of these students by providing more school buildings in town, with the required equipment and conveniences. Minister Hasheem also said that he proposed to provide a fully equipped operation theatre for Kegalle base hospital with all modern equipment at a cost of Rs. 10 million, initially. Minister Podinilame brought to the notice at this meeting that an Intensive Care Unit is a basic requirement for Kegalle Base Hospital, and that he has arranged to fulfil this need at a cost of Rs. 70 million, so that Kegalle Base Hospital could be elevated as "Kegalle General Hospital". Minister Podinilame also announced that he has arranged for 5,243 water supplying projects for Kegalle district and in this regard, for the present Rs. 5 million has been set apart. Minister Podinilame also said that the National Urban Development project with forty one units will be established in Kalugalle Mawatha in Kegalle town, and that arrangements are in the offing for the Mawanella Development project which is already planned for implementation, and still more lands are to be acquired for this purpose. Kegalle Urban Council Chairman Jude Rukantha Perera brought to the notice of the presiding Minister Podinilame that trenches are being dug by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board in the UC areas for the purpose of laying pipes but these trenches are only simply covered up with earth without properly mending them, hence, the Urban Council is at a loss as for renovations and repairs the UC has to incur much expenditure. In this instance Minister Podinilame said, that the responsibility of repairing those are entirely left to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board as it is responsible for the trenches so dug. Samurdhi Minister R. A. D. Sirisena requested the police to take action against the 'kassippu' distillers at all times as they are a menace to whole society today. The Chairman of Rambukkana Pradeshiya Sabha G. G. Jayasinghe said that the contractors who have undertaken to construct and repair roads are working at a snail's pace and some have not taken the responsibility to perform any work in this regard causing obstruction to national transportation. Minister Podinilame requested all Pradeshiya Sabha Chairmen to tender all their three year plans for the development of their respective areas soon. He said that he has got to submit such plans to the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, to apprise him of the steps taken by respective Pradeshiya Sabhas for the development of their localities.
