No Confidence Motion demonstrated Opposition unity - SLFP

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, in a news release issued yesterday, said the No-Confidence Motion against Minister John Amaratunga proved the unity of the Opposition.

It said the full participation in the vote by the Opposition, except for a PA MP who is abroad, debunked government allegations that the Opposition was in disarray.

The release quoted Chief Opposition Whip Mangala Samaraweera as saying that the Opposition would defeat the Conscience Bill and attempts to reduce the powers of the President.

The release said that some of Minister Amaratunga's supporters in the public gallery hooted and whistled at the end of the Motion, adding that such rowdy behaviour has never been witnessed in Parliament earlier.
