Under 23 cricket: Jayasundera match-winner

Chilaw Marians SC put up a splendid performance as they defeated Nugegoda SC outright by an innings and 243 runs in the BCCSL under 23 Division One cricket tournament quarterfinal match concluded at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium yesterday.

Their success had great significance because they were competing in this tournament only for the second time after been promoted to the Premier Division in 2000. They piled up a massive first innings total of 546 for 7 and then bundled out their opponents for 134 and 169 respectively. Praneeth Jayasundera completed a fine all round performance claiming 4 for 54 and was supported well by Dhammika Niroshan (2 for 18) and Omesh Wijesiriwardena (3 for 41).

Bloomfield beat Panadura

Bloomfield cruised towards a convincing 138 run outright win over Panadura SC in their BCCSL under 23 Division I cricket tournament quarterfinal match concluded at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

Panadura SC chasing 313 for an outright win after having earlier conceded first innings points, were dismissed for 175 with T. Perera hitting a top score of 72. T. Lakshitha did the damage with 3 for 31 and was backed up well by Kaushal Lokuarachchi (2 for 20) and Duminda Perera (2 for 12).

Bloomfield: 285 and 216 (D. Perera 68, I. Daniel 41, C. Silva 5 for 62)

Panadura SC: 188 and 175 (T. Perera 72, K. Lokuarachchi 2 for 20, T. Lakshitha 3 for 31, D. Perera 2 for 12).

Air Force beat CCC

Sri Lanka Air Force SC put up another giant killing performance as they defeated the more fancied CCC team outright by three wickets in their BCCSL under 23 Division One cricket tournament quarterfinal match concluded at Reid Avenue yesterday.

CCC declared their second innings at 309 for 5 in an attempt to win the game outright after having earlier conceded first innings points. But the Airmen responded magnificently and reached their target in style scoring 294 for 7 with Pubudu Wickrema and Roy Silva stroking half centuries.

CCC: 218 and 309 for 5 decl (Dhammika Ranaweera 82, Pubudu Seneviratne 59, S. Dananjaya 4 for 94)

Air Force SC: 234 and 296 for 7 (A. Jayawickrema 40, N. Wijesinghe 27, P. Wickrema 69, R. Silva 79, C. Cooray 19 n.o, A. Ratnika 3 for 105, I. Ratnayake 2 for 76).

Tamil Union on first innings

Tamil Union went through some anxious moments before settling down to a first innings win over Kurunegala YCC in their BCCSL under 23 Division One cricket tournament quarterfinal match concluded at Braybrooke Place yesterday. Set to make 203 runs for an outright win Tamil Union collapsed to 162 for 7 with Malintha Gajanayake making a top score of 57. Earlier Kurunegala YCC declared their second innings at 239 for 8 with D. Ramanayake stroking an unbeaten half century.

Kurunegala YCC: 176 and 239 for 8 decl (D. Ramanayake 57 n.o, D. Gunatilleke 30, R. Abeyratne 27, N. Fernando 3 for 59, M. Gajanayake 2 for 43)

Tamil Union: 212 and 162 for 7 (M. Gajanayake 57, S. Maithripala 25, S. Priyanthaka 2 for 27, C. Ediriweera 2 for 19).
