Positive response from British investors

Minister G.L. Peiris yesterday invited the British business community to invest more in Sri Lanka, taking advantage of the conducive climate created by the peace process.

Peiris, who holds the Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion portfolios, told top UK business executives and senior government officials that the peace process was a fundamental factor for attracting more investments to Sri Lanka.

The Minister, on a brief visit to the UK to highlight investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, said the government has adopted a pragmatic approach to resolve the ethnic problem.

"This is the most opportune moment to invest in Sri Lanka. Peace prospects apart, the geographical location, the Indo-Lanka Free Trade Agreement, the market economy, a motivated labour force and developed legal and banking systems facilitate investments in Sri Lanka," the Minister told the investment forum organised by the Lankan High Commission.

More than 50 senior executives who attended the meeting expressed willingness to invest substantially in Sri Lanka and promised to send a fact-finding mission soon.

The Minister held a separate meeting with officials of Marks and Spencer at which they discussed a proposal to consider establishing Sri Lanka as a regional hub for merchandising operations.

Minister Peiris said he was encouraged by the positive response of potential British investors and hoped that more UK-Lanka would be established in a peaceful environment.
