Certificate awarding ceremony

The certificate awarding ceremony of the Certificate Course in Governance and Public Policy was held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7, recently. Participants from 12 countries in South and South East Asia, the Middle East and Africa received their certificates from the Minister Assisting Foreign Affairs Lal Dharmapriya Gamage who was the Chief Guest at the occasion.

Minister Gamage said "the Technical Cooperation Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was initiated as a goodwill gesture by the Government of Sri Lanka towards her neighbouring countries in South and South East Asia, since July this year. The fellowship also extended to Afghan nationals". He further emphasized that this initiative is also taking yet another step ahead in Sri Lanka's efforts and contribution towards south-south cooperation.

This programme was the 19th in a series of programmes sponsored by the Technical Cooperation Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (TCP-MOFA) since its inception in January 2001.

The Course was conceptualized and designed to enhance the knowledge and professional skills of officials involved in governance and policy formulation in the public sector providing an opportunity for the participants to identify problems of governance and to explore remedial measures in addressing such problems in the context of the economic constraints faced by the Governments of developing countries. A Special feature of the Course on Governance and Public Policy is that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department of External Resources were also co-sponsors.

Assistance from these two institutions enable to bring together a larger and a diverse group of participants from the developing world with whom Sri Lanka could share her learning and experience in the sphere of governance and public policy.

Representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, donor agencies, UNDP officials and the officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs were among the distinguished invitees at the ceremony. It was followed by a Sri Lankan traditional cultural performance and dinner.
