A batch of 836 graduands will be awarded degrees at the 10th Convocation of the University of Ruhuna to be held at the University Gymnasium, Matara on Saturday September 14. Chancellor of the Ruhuna University Ven. Aththudawe Sri Rahula Mahanayake Thera will preside. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ranjith Senaratne will also be present. University Registrar K.D. Dumindusena said in a press release that this year D.Sc. honorary degrees will be conferred on Prof. Sena Susantha de Silva of the Deakin University Australia and Jeffrey Bawa, the famous architect who was consultant of the University Building Programme, while the D. Litt honorary degree will be conferred on Music maestro Premasiri Kehmadasa. The convocation addresses will be delivered by Prof. A.D.V. de S. Indraratne during the morning session and Mr. Khemadasa during the afternoon session. The number of degrees conferred this year in each category will be as follows: B.Sc. (Agri) 128, B.A. - 185, B.A. (Special) 101, B. Com. - 118, B.BA - 41, MBBS - 117. B.Sc. - 129 and B.Sc. (Special) - 11. The release further said: The University of Ruhuna was established in 1978 as Matara Campus of the then University of Sri Lanka and it was elevated to University status as from Feb. 1, 1984. Now it has reached the 25th year. This University consists of five faculties. The Faculties of Science, Humanities and Social Sciences are situated at Wellamadama, Matara. The Faculty of Agriculture is situated at Mapalana, Kamburupitiya. The Faculties of Medicine and Engineering are located at Karapitiya and Hapugala, respectively. At present, the student population of the university is about 6,284. In addition to undergraduate courses, the University conducts a number of Postgraduate courses leading to M. Phil, M.Sc. MBA, and Ph.D. Degrees. The first convocation of the University of Ruhuna was held at the Auditorium of Faculty of Medicine, Galle, on March 22, 1986. At this Convocation, then Minister of Finance Ronnie de Mel was conferred an honorary Degree of D. Litt. During the last 25 year period, nine convocations have been held in this University and about 8,000 graduates were conferred degrees. At all the convocations, about 22 honorary degrees and 76 Postgraduate degrees were conferred. |
