The Diocese of Colombo of the Church of Ceylon has declared Sunday September 15 as a Day of Prayer for Peace in our land, states a press release issued by the Bishop of Colombo. The release: "The Synod of the Clergy that met recently has decided that special prayers will be offered on that day in all our churches for peace and for the success of the Peace Conference scheduled to be held in Thailand during that week. Saturday September 14 is Holy Cross Day in our Church's calendar. The Eucharistic Intention on the Day of Prayer will therefore be on the theme 'The Cross and Peace for Sri Lanka'. "On Monday September 16 when the talks begin in Thailand, church bells island-wide will be rung at 12 noon and congregations will gather to offer special prayers. The Diocese will offer thanks to God for the ceasefire that has held for the last six months and for all those whose peace initiatives over the years have led to the present climate of peace. Prayers will be said for our leaders, for those engaged in the talks and for a positive outcome that will strengthen the prevailing thrust and process towards a just and equitable settlement of the problem that has marred ethnic relations in our country for so long. The Diocese prays that an early settlement will enable all our people to live together with peace and dignity. "The Diocese acknowledges that our prayers must be accompanied by our renewed efforts and calls all people of goodwill to continue to strive towards peace. We cannot leave the work only to our leaders." |
