The repayment of credits received by the members and account holders of Horana Samurdhi Central Society had been 99% successful and they had been true to their own Bank, whereas some rich-businessmen who had obtained billions of rupees as loans from a state owned Bank had neglected to repay their loans leaving those Banks in financial crisis, said Minister of Samurdhi, R.A.D. Sirisena in Horana. The Minister was addressing the 6th annual general meeting of Horana Central Samurdhi Society (Samurdhi Maha Sangamaya) held at the auditorium of Taxila Central College, Horana held last Friday, September 6. Minister Sirisena said that the Horana Samurdhi Central Society consisted of fifteen bank branches in Horana, Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya and Madurawela divisions and the services of the society was tremendous, and it had become one of the best Samurdhi Societies in Sri Lanka. During the previous year the society had given scholarships to a number of students of Samurdhi beneficiary families. Seven houses were given to handicapped soldiers. During the 100 days programme of the present government five houses were constructed for poor families and a Poultry Farm also was being conducted satisfactorily. He said: We have found out some Samurdhi societies are flourishing while others are not developing. We have to think over it. The concept of Samurdhi is not merely to provide money to the poor for their living but to alleviate them from their poverty, but to encourage them to stand on their own feet providing various types of credit schemes through Samurdhi Banks. He said: We want to know the number of Samurdhi recipient families who have overcome their economic hardships and live happily and who can live without Samurdhi benefits. We have appointed five member committees at rural level to conduct surveys to find out genuine poor families who should be given Samurdhi benefits. Those whose Samurdhi benefits are stopped should continue their Bank accounts and they will be helped through the Bank for their further progress. Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratna, Director General of Samurdhi said that one of the expectations of Samurdhi Movement was to understand the latent skills of Samurdhi families and to develop them to raise their living standard. Kalutara District (UNP) MP P.D. Abeyratna said that Samurdhi recipients shouldn't be at home idling thinking about their inabilities and poverty. They should work hard, cultivate their own plot of land to earn more money to get their difficulties solved. Sudesh Elapatha, General Manager of Horana Samurdhi Central Society read out the annual budget report for 2001. W. Duliyes Singho, Chairman, Horana Samurdhi Society, G.D. Somapala, Secretary, K. Chandrasena, Madurawela Divisional Secretary and Mrs. Nanda Illeperuma, Manager of Kalutara District Samurdhi Authority also spoke. |
