Rupasinghe keeps hopes alive by Dinesh Weerawansa Fifth seed Amrit Rupasinghe of Sri Lanka kept the host nation's chances alive when he qualified to play in today's final of the International Tennis Federation Under-18 Junior championships at the National Tennis Centre courts. He won a two-and-half-hour long semi-final battle with compatriot Harshana Godamanne yesterday. Fifteen- year-old Rupasinghe,a student of St. Thomas Kollupitiya, prevailed over the third seed Royalist, Godamanne, 6/3, 2/6, 6/2. He will meet Taiwan's giant killer Yi Chang, the sixth seed in today's final. The lad from Taipei toppled the top seed and compatriot, Hsieh Wang Cheng, 54th in world junior ranking, 6/4, 6/4 in 90 minutes. In the Girls event, 13-year-old Madura Ranganathan, who toppled the first seed from China in the first round, was brought to grief herself in the semifinals by Chinese Zhang Shu Ai, who won a near two-hour match, 6/3, 7/5. Zhang will meet Prim Buarlee of Thailand, who beat teammate T Chaichana Chaicharan, 6/3, 6/3. Meanwhile, in the Girls Doubles final, the Chinese pair of Zhang Shu Ai and Wu Shuang overcame Madura Ranganathan and Wang Wai-yu of India and Taiwan respectively, 7/5,6/4 in 107 minutes. |
