Isipatana - Matale combined clash in curtain raiser

The fourth Singer Sri Lankan Rugby Sevens organised by Kandy Sports Club and sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka Limited and the SriLankan Airlines and cosponsored by Connaissance de Ceylon Limited will kick off with the Schools Pools Games on Friday September 13 at 10 a.m. at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

Defending champions Isipatana will take on Matale Combined Schools in the opening match. An interesting card of matches is lined up for the day with Royal Vs Trinity at 1.20 p.m. being one of the matches which should draw a big spectator interest.

The other key matches are St. Peter's Vs Kingswood, Isipatana Vs Wesley, St. Peter's Vs St. Thomas', St. Anthony's Vs Vidyartha and Kingswood Vs St. Thomas' which should produce sparkling rugby.

The sixteen teams which has entered this tournament have been divided into four groups which are as follows:

Group A: Isipatana, Matale Schools Combined, Wesley, Thurstan.

Group B: Royal Ruhunu Combined, Dharmaraja and Trinity.

Group C: St. Sylvester's, St. Anthony's, Vidyartha and Sabaragamuwa Combined.

Group D: St. Peter's, Ananda, Kingdswood, S.Thomas' and Kingswood.

In the inaugural year Isipatana College became champions but in the year 2000 St. Anthony's College lifted the title beating Kingswood by the comfortable margin of 33-12. Last year Isipatana won the title again.
