Eagle -Welikada clash in Mayor's Cup final Reigning champion team of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Football League Eagle SC of Obeysekarapura only ruffled their feathers to outsmart the other clubs in their group to enter the finals of the Mayor's Cup football tournament conducted by Kotte Football League. 13 teams, from Kotte, Kolonnawa, Kaduwela, Maharagama electorates participated for the prestigious trophy the 'Mayor's Cup' and cash prizes sponsored by Butani Exports of Rajagiriya. Rs. 30,000 for the winners, Rs. 15,000 for runner-up team will be given. At the semi-finals played at the M. H. Mohamed Playground, Eagle SC defeated Kotte United SC 3 goals to nil, while Welikada Youth SC a vintage club in the locality fought a fierce battle against fancied Battaramulla SC 2-1 to enter the final scheduled for the 15th September 2002 against Eagle SC at Obeysekarapura Playground commencing at 4 p.m. Eagle SC who won the Mayor's Trophy last year are hoping to claw Welikada Youth SC into submission with all fire and fury to retain the Mayor's Cup in their cupboard for the second successive year. Elaborate arrangements are being made by officials of the Kotte League to make this a event with the support of new Mayor of Kotte Ranjith Cooray, a big success. The Mayor is the President of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Football League. He has promised more football competition to keep the clubs and its supporters away from drugs and crime. Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs will be the chief guest. President of the Football Federation Gamini Randeni DIG, Vice President of the Asian Football Confederation Manilal Fernando, CEO, Chrishantha Perera, Mahendra Gunasekera SSP Nugegoda and Kishin Butani, Chairman of Butani Exporters will be guests of honour. Kishin Butani is the sponsor of the Mayor's Cup. Play commences at 4 p.m. |
