Increased container throughput The Port of Colombo has seen an increase in handled container throughput last month, a press release from the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping said. It said the increase was 11.4% when compared to the same to the same period last year. The container throughput of August 2002 as against the average monthly throughput of the first half of this year has registered a growth of 12.1%. Despite the slowdown in the global economy sharply reducing the demand for Indian Sub Continent exports, achieving a container throughput of growth of 11.4% during August is considered remarkable, the release said. The Jaye Container Terminal, the flagship container terminal of the Port of Colombo and the largest Container Terminal in South Asia continues to sustain its level of efficiency with most vessels achieving a crane productivity of over 25 moves per hour and berth productivity around 70 moves per hour. See table above for crane productivity of vessels that handled between 20-35 moves per crane/per hour from January - August 2002. In a bid to boost its image as the pre-eminent load center (hub) of South Asian on the advice of Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Ports Development, Shipping, Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Parakrama Dissanayake has been spearheading a programme to boost service delivery to clients. |
