Dilmah launches The Cricket Network

Colombo, Sri Lanka, Dilmah Tea, sponsors of the Sri Lankan national cricket team have announced the launch of The Dilmah Cricket Network, a cricket website at www.dilmahtea.com/cricket designed to provide followers of Sri Lankan cricket an opportunity to learn more about the game, the Sri Lanka team, and individual players.

The website is dedicated to Sri Lankan cricket and is not intended to compete with commercial cricket-dedicated websites. The Dilmah site is launched in context of the proud association between Dilmah Tea and Sri Lanka Cricket; Dilmah is the official sponsor of the Sri Lanka cricket team until March, 2005.

The Dilmah Cricket Network is a unique sports website offering surfers the chance to send each other E-cards, interact and comment on players and matches at an online Forum, whilst also accessing scorecards of past and current games.

Cricket celebrities will feature on the site with insights from Tony Greig on whether Muttiah Muralitharan should tour Australia later this year, to Dav Whatmore's recollections of his participation in a solitary limited over international.

The Dilmah Cricket Network enters an arena where the major players are global cricket sites like TheWicket.com and Cricinfo.com, specializing in real time news and cricket results. Director of the Cricket Network, Dilhan C. Fernando states, 'The Cricket Network is not intended to compete with the major cricket sites. Our objective is to increase awareness of our national sport, applaud our cricketers and to celebrate the game of cricket.'

In an interesting coincidence, The Cricket Network will be managed by Dilmah Promotions Manager (Cricket & Online) David Colin-Thome, who began his career as a tea taster for Dilmah in the late 70s and returned this year to Sri Lanka after many years in Australia. He is a keen follower of cricket and an accomplished writer on the game. The site pays homage to Sir Donald Bradman.

The "Murali Tracker" plots the great bowler's progress to the top and the Sri Lankan cricketers individual performances are linked to a donation meter for the Hope Cancer Hospital. With the launch of the site Dilmah are offering the Cricket Association a donation towards the Hope Cancer Project, linked to the team performance. Dilmah expect this programme to generate almost Rs. 350,000 this year for the Hope Project, and additionally, direct visitors to the site to visit the Hope website to make their donations.

While not statistically driven, the information available to the visitor is varied and presented in an eye-catching manner.

The site was designed and constructed for Dilmah by The Computer Centre (www.tccpl.com. Dilmah is Sri Lanka's first global brand, with a presence in 90 countries around the world. Dilmah Tea recently launched its Teas for the first time in Sri Lanka. The brand was founded by Merrill J. Fernando, Chairman of the MJF Group.
