World Postal Day programme to be launched in Kalutara

The Postal Department under the guidance of the Mass Communication Ministry has planned to commemorate World post Day on October 9 with a series of development activities aimed at improving post and telecommunication facilities countrywide. The programme will be launched starting from the Kalutara District. The main world Post Day commemoration ceremony will be held at the Kalutara town hall on October 9 under the patronage of Mass Communications Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar. Lands Minister Dr. Rajitha Seneratne and Western Province Chief Minister Reginald Cooray will be among the special invitees.

The highlights at the main ceremony will include the issuing of a commemorative stamp and a first day cover, distribution of prizes and awards among winners of an all island students art and essay competition held to mark post day and winners of a competition among philatelic clubs and presentation of felicitation awards to a group of retired postal employees.

Thereafter, a communications week will be observed in the Kalutara District where priority will be given for improving postal and telecommunications facilities in the various electorates constituting the district said a press release issued by the Ministry yesterday.

Among the highlights of this program will be the setting up of a public Advisory Committee in respect of each post office in the district to submit views and suggestions on their maintenance and development and assist in the implementation of such programmes. In addition each post office and sub post office in the district will be provided with telephone and telemail facilities.

The agency post office scheme introduced in upcountry plantation districts will also be extended to the plantation areas of Matugama, Agalawatta, Horana and Bandaragama during this week.

The release said the 'Sannivedana Jana Mehewara' mobile service will be held in each electorate to find instant solutions to the problems of the public and issue postal identity cards to students on the same day. The release said a branch of the National Printing School will also be set up in the Kalutara District during this week with an initial intake of 50 trainees selected from among unemployed youth in the district.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commissions has selected 100 schools in the district for conducting a mobile computer training programme for the student population.

During the week the State Printing Corporation will open sales outlets in 25 selected schools in the district to provide exercise books and other stationery and equipment at concessionary prices.

Ten new post offices and four new communication centres will also be opened in the district during this week.

All these programmes are designed to improve efficiency in the postal department and make it more people friendly, the release added.
