Massive home garden project to uplift rural economy

by Wadduwa special correspondent

"The Ministry of Women's Affairs has launched a massive home garden project throughout the island to uplift the rural economy. Under this project fifty women would be selected from twenty-six Divisional Secretariat Divisions. Further four women would be selected as leaders from each Divisional Secretariat division to supervise the project and advise them."

This was stated by Mrs. Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayaka participating at a ceremony held at Kalutara Secretariat to distribute agricultural implements to women of Bandaragama and Agalawatta Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

Mrs. Yasmin Siriwardhana, G.A., Kalutara received the distinguished gathering.

Speaking further she stressed that the main objective of the national project is to upgrade the living standard of the families of urban and rural areas and they would be provided fertiliser free of chemicals. Under this scheme a nutritious meal would be provided to combat malnutrition and the home garden will be a source of additional income to the families.

The project will be implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture and the participants will be trained at these centres. The seeds and plants will be distributed early and the women who receive training will be given free agricultural implements.

She said that 1,300 home gardens will be commenced in Divisional Secretariat Divisions and the number will be further increased throughout the island.

The project will be continued throughout the year and finally there will be a competition to select the best home garden and valuable prizes will be awarded to encourage the participants," she added.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Women's Affairs Lalith Dissanayake, Deputy Director D. Hettiarachchi, Senior Secretary Jayantha Rukmani and several others participated at the ceremony.
