Three new teams for under 21 rugby tourney

Three new teams are taking part in the under 21 rugby tournament organised by the Western Province Rugby Football Union which is being worked off at Havelock Park.

Jawatte Lions, Old Nalandians and Old Dharmalokians are the three new teams which are battling with the nine other teams for the SLRFU trophy. The other teams are defending champions CR and FC, Havelocks SC, CH and FC, Kelani Valley, Air Force SC, Old Zahirians, Ruhunu RFC, Petersons and Army/Navy Combined.

The President of the SLRFU Harsha Mayadunne addressing a press briefing last week said that the under 21 tournament gives an opportunity to the youngsters who cannot find places in the 'A' Division teams to show their prowess. Those players who excel in this tournament will be picked into a Development Squad which might be pitted against foreign teams to give them the much needed foreign exposure. The Cup Championship finals of this tournament will be worked off at Havelock Park on October 12 at 5 p.m.which will be preceded by the Plate final. The matches which will be worked off today are between newcomers Jawatte Lions and Old Zahirians at 3.45 p.m and CR and FC v Kelani Valley at 5.00 p.m. Last year CR and FC emerged champions by beating arch rivals Havelocks SC in the final. The Cup champions will receive the SLRFU trophy and the Plate winners too will receive a trophy. -R.S
