13 fishermen missing in Jaffna lagoon Thirteen fishermen who went fishing in six catamarans (vallams) in the Jaffna lagoon on Monday are reported missing, defence sources said yesterday. The missing fishermen and the six catamarans had not returned by last evening, sources added. The missing catamarans were among a fleet of about 332 catamarans with 903 fishermen who left for fishing around 4.30 in the morning. Naval troops have been informed of their disappearance. Meanwhile, Naval troops detected an Indian boat with four Indian fishermen on board, washed ashore close to Point Pedro. They were handed over to Point Pedro police for further investigations on Monday around 7.30 p.m. Their vessel has set off from Nagapatnam on October 18. The Security Forces in consultation with SLMM representatives on Monday provided safe passage for 25 LTTE cadres bound for Batticaloa from Vavuniya, Defence sources added. These LTTE cadres, who arrived at Omanthai check point around 8.45 a.m. have reached Trincomalee via Habarana about 3.00 p.m. The cadres have later entered uncleared areas in Sampur around 3.15 p.m through the Muttur checkpoint. The SLMM representatives have given clearance for this passage. However, fourteen of them were expected to return to Batticaloa via Mahindapura yesterday. Security Forces in Mannar on Monday arrested a suspicious man, who failed to provide any identification documents or valid reasons for his presence in a location close to the Security Forces complex at Talladi, around 3.00 in the morning and handed him over to Mannar Police station. According to initial investigations, the suspect was found while he was proceeding towards the main entrance of the Security Forces complex. Mannar Police are conducting investigations. Villagers in Nelumweva and Kuchchaveli in the general area of Uppuweli have complained that the LTTE was imposing taxes on their loads of sand and firewood. It has been revealed that t axes of Rs 150/= for a load of sand and Rs.100 for a load of firewood have been imposed by LTTE cadres. (RW) |
